North Country Food Bank receives 6 acre land donation!
Crookston, MN (2014) - North Country Food Bank, Inc.’s search for land to build a new facility is over – thanks to the good deed of Keith Danks, Jr., of Equity Management Co., a local real estate development company.
After hearing of North Country’s need for a larger facility, Danks offered to donate approximately 6 acres of land along North Broadway to give the Food Bank a place to build. “This is such a generous donation and one that comes at a perfect time,” said Susie Novak, Executive Director of North Country.
“North Country has been looking for a piece of land large enough to house our operations under one roof in the Crookston community for a while now. The location of this property is ideal for many reasons. It provides easy access for the programs and services we offer, while being located in close proximity to a major highway for trucking purposes,” Novak says.
“This land donation will help to jump start our efforts to build a new facility. North Country has grown tremendously over the last 5 years, and needs approximately 30,000 square feet of warehouse and program space to store and distribute food to charitable organizations that serve people in need. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Danks, we will now be able to start the planning process. Now, we can concentrate on the building planning and raising the funds needed to build a suitable facility,” said Novak.
Donations Still Needed
Though the question of where to build has now been decided, the need for funding to build a new facility, while still increasing our efforts to feed the hungry in northwest and west central Minnesota, is ongoing. North Country relies on the generosity of individuals, organizations and corporations to insure that nobody in northwest and west central Minnesota has to wonder where their next meal is coming from.
Novak says that for every $1 donated, North Country is able to distribute enough food for 5 meals. “Because of the scale of our operations, our bulk purchasing power, and volunteer resources, we can stretch every donated dollar further than the average person would be able to at the grocery store,” Novak explained.
